Scun Scan Productions is also one of a small number of companies that continues to pioneer independently produced investigative programming in Ireland. Its most recent offering in this regard, "Iniúchadh Oidhreacht na Cásca - which examined the controversial recent planning history of the 1916 historical site in Moore Street Dublin - was selected for a Platinum award at the International Houston Texas Film Festival.  Other investigative programmes include “Fullerton” which investigated the assassination of the Donegal councillor Eddie Fullerton, and “Brathadóirí” a series which looked at the some of the more dark seedy aspects associated with the role informers played in the recent Irish Troubles.

On the other hand Scun Scan’s historical documentaries have covered issues as diverse, as a series on Irish Highwaymen, the fascinating history of the order of the Redemptorists priests in Ireland, 100 years of the GAA in Ulster, how the Rath Cairn Gaeltacht came about, and the miscarriage of justice that followed the Sallins Train Robbery. While among its catalogue of art documentaries are "Aisling Hollywood" a profile of Irish Hollywood actress Fionnula Flanagan and "File na gCartún" a profile of political cartoonist Doll.

Prior to taking over Scun Scan Productions Ó Maolfabhail worked with the Pat Kenny radio show and as reporter for Radio na Gaeltachta in RTE. He also worked as PRO for the North South Irish Language body Foras na Gaeilge and as media consultant to the All Party Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution. He has published a wide range of articles both in English and Irish, and has lectured in media studies in Maynooth University.
